من حق رفاق الدرب، وهم على وفرة كبيرة مقدارَ ما كان صاحب الذكرى أخّاذاً ومستقطباً وكاريسمياً، ان يعلوا في سنة غيابه العاشرة تحديدا رمزية الذكرى ملتصقة بـ"الربيع العربي"، فهو حين كان لبنان يرزح تحت جاهليته الاهلية في لغة الدمار والدماء وقبع العرب مع العالم متفرجين عليه في السبعينيات والثمانينيات، راح يصدر تلك الاحلام "المجنونة" آنذاك، احلام المواطنة أو العلمانية الحرية والانعتاق

الانعتاق العربي بصورة ملبننة خالصة اسقط عليها خصوصيات بلده وثقافته الموروثة جيلا اثر جيل

مثل هذا المفهوم يساور معظمنا اليوم، فيما الايدي على القلوب لرؤية اخطار هائلة ومحاذير واقعية في زحف بعض الظواهر المتطرفة المحمولة مع الثورات

" شهدنا في السنوات الاخيرة محاولات كثيرة للسي آي إي لحل المشاكل السياسية باستخدام القوة، وحان الوقت لاستخلاص العبر"

في الخلاصة إن قيامة لبنان من أوحاله والفخاخ ليعود وطناً للرسالة والقداسة والكرامات يكمن هو في عودة المواطن اللبناني أولاً إلى ينابيع الحرية والإيمان والصدق والحق، والرجوع دون تردد إلى مفاهيم ثقافة احترام الذات والغير وإلى التصرف على أساس أنه مخلوق حر وليس عبداً، وإلا "فالج لا تعالج

ما أصعبَها لحظة... لحظة أفتقدُ فيها الأخَ الوفيّ، رفيقَ النضال ومحفّزَ الفرحِ في أحلكِ الظروف...

ما أشقاها وقفة... وقفةٌ أفتقدُ فيها كتفَ الصديق، أتّكئُ عليها، فتُخفّف عنيّ الآلام و تُنسيني الأحزان...

صديقي ايلي اشتقتُ إليك... اشتقتُ الى عنفوانِك الجامح الى نبرتِك المستفزّة الى حماستِك الفريدة...

اشتقتُ الى شهامتِك التي أدْمَتْ قلبي يومَ استهدافك بالمتفجّرات، حين دَعَوْتَ القَتَلة الى النأْيِ عن الشامخ الثائر، عن تلك الشائكة، وتحدَّيتَهم مُواجهتَي أنا والتوجُّهَ إليا أنا...

ربماّ كانت لوعةُ فقدانِك فارَقَت لحظةً وُجداني، ربماّ كُنْتُ نجحتُ في لملمةِ دموعي كلّما لامسَ ذِكْرُ إسمِك مسمعي...

يا للملاقاةِ قدرِك البطل ، فشاء القدرُ أن تكون صورتُك في الصورةَ الأخيرةَ لك وأنت تعُجُّ بالحياةِ والحماسِ والحنان...

وأنْ تبقى صورتُك في ذاكرتي، تلك الصورة التي أريْتَني إياّها، حرّاً، شامخاً، ممتطياً صهوةَ حب لبنان، لا قيودَ تُكبّلُك ولا معوقاتٍ تعترضُ سبيلَك... كنت فخوراً أنكّ تمكّنت من ذلك العظيم المشرئِبّ، فروّضتَه كما روّضْتَ قبلَه سياسيين كُثُر حاولوا التمرّدَ على ما آمنتَ به فكسرتَهم بحماستِك...

ما أقساها لحظة أستذكرُ فيها رفيقَ الحواراتِ الجريئة صبيحةَ الراحة واستراحة المحارب...

لحظة، أستحْضِرُ فيها تلكَ النظرةَ الثاقبة، نظرةَ الثائرِ الذي يَتحدىّ الدنيا قاطبةً أنْ تتطلّعَ الى عينيْه و تجرؤَ أنْ تقولَ له أنّه ليس على حقّ...

وكَمْ كُنتَ على حقّ...

ماذا عسايَ أقولُ في الذكرى العاشرة لغيابِك...

أأقولُ لهُم نعَم، لقد نِلْتُم من الجسد و فجّرتم حِقْدَكُم، فكبّرتُم حجمَ متفجرَّتكم لتُبعثِروا ذلك الجسدَ الطاهرَ أشلاءَ في الوديان...

ربماّ نجحتُم في حرمانِنا عطفَ الأخ و حنانَ الصديق، لكنّكم فشلتُم في إسكاتِ الصوت الذي لا يزال "بيوديّ" حتى اليوم...

أتذكّرُ عندما قلت: "نحن مؤمنون بلبنان وطناً نهائياً لجميع ابنائه وليس مقاطعة تابعة لسوريا أو اسرائيل أو خطأ في معاهدة سايكس بيكو".

يومَها لم يسمع بشّار الأسد، أتُراهُ يَسمعُ اليوم؟ هل يُشاهِدُ بشّار الاسد هديرَ الثورات؟ هل يُدركُ ماذا اقترفت يداه؟ هل هو فعلاً مقتنعٌ بما قالَه من أنْ ليس له قوات مسلحةّ و لا علاقةَ له بالمجازر التي تحُصدُ العُزّل الأبرياء في لبنان ؟ هل هو تذاكٍ ؟ هل هي حالةُ نكران؟ أم هو تَنَصُّلٌ خوفاً من عواقبِ اتهّامِه بجرائمَ ضدّ الانسانية؟

من تَجاهَلَ يوماً النداءَ الصادقَ لم تَكُنْ مُشْكِلَتُه أنّه أطرش... فهو إبنُ بيئةٍ لم تتعوّدْ يوماً الاتعّاظَ من الأخطاء، هو إبنٌ وَرِثَ كلَّ الخصالِ غيرِ الحميدةِ عن أبيه، هو إبنُ هذا النظامِ البعثيِّ المتغطرسِ والمُجرمِ والدكتاتوري والإستعلائي والاستخباراتي... إبنُ تركيبةٍ غدّارةٍ تَخْطُفُ مَنْ لا يؤلِّهونها، تُلغي من لا يَستسلمون لها وتَقتُلُ من يُقاوِمونَها...

نعم، لقد أزْعَجَهُ شهيدنا البطل الرئيس ايلي حبيقة، أزعجَهُ كثيراً لأنهّ كشفَه على حقيقتِه عندما قالَ له:

اليوم يُريد بشّار أنْ يُقنعَنا "بأنّه شاهد ما شافشِ حاجة"... لكن الأيامَ تغيرّت! فحماه 1982 لم تعُد صالحة في عصر التقنيات الحديثة واليوتيوب... فإنْ كنتَ تَدْري يا بشّار فتلك مصيبةٌ، وإنْ كُنت لا تَدري فالمصبيةُ أعظمُ... في الحالتيْن النتيجةُ واحدة: إكتَفِ بما جَنَتْهُ يداك في سوريا بعدما جَنَتْهُ في لبنان، حيث خَطَفْتَ وقتَلْتَ أنتَ وأفرادُ عائلتِك وعملاؤك وأجهزتُك زهرةَ شبابِنا... فُكَّ عن كرسيِّك الذي نَخَرَتْ خشبَه صرخاتُ الأمهّات الثكالى... فُكَّ أنت ونظامُك عن صدرِ الشعبِ الحرّ، فربيعُ لبنان سيُزهر عاجلاً أم آجلاً بعدما أزْهَرَ ربيعُ العرب و بعدما تفتّحَت زهورُ ربيعِ بيروت، هذه الزهورُ التيٌ سقيْناها بدمائِنا

ما أشبهَ الأمسِ باليوم... نَصَحْتَهم ولم يتّعظوا. كشفتَهم فخَوّنوك، نبّهتَهم الى خطاياهم بحقِّ لبنان فأَلبسوك ثوبَ العميل وزغْرَدوا لاستشهادِك...

دماؤك يا ايلي حبيقة هي التي سرعتّ في تحويلِ ملفِّ اغتيالِ رفيق الحريري الى الأممِ المتّحدة، ليشملَ القضايا المرتبطة ...

كدنا نلتقي في دنيا الشهادة

سنوات على استشهاد الوزير الراحل ايلي حبيقة، وكأنّها خمسة أيّام.

الغضب على الجريمة لم يهدأ ولن يهدأ، حتى يُساق المجرمون إلى العدالة، حتى تُقطع اليد التي تذبح من أجل الإرهاب والفوضى والإلغاء السياسيّ.

إلتقينا في وطن واحد، في منطقة واحدة، على مشروع سياسيّ واحد، وكاد قدرنا أن نلتقي في دنيا الشهادة، إلّا أنّ إرادة الله كانت لها مشيئة أخرىنَم قرير العين، ففجرُ العدالة اقترب، علّه يضع حدّاً لآلات القتل السياسيّ العمياء التي طاولت قادة ومسؤولين "جريمتهم" فقط أنّهم يحبّون بلدهم ويدافعون عنه.

إن الإنسان المؤمن بربه وبكتبه المقدسة وبتعاليمه وبموت وقيامة السيد المسيح لا يموت، بل يرقد على رجاء القيامة بانتظار يوم الحساب الأخير، والرب الذي وهب الإنسان نعمة الحياة هو وحده يقرر متى يستردها وليس أي مخلوق أخر.

اليوم ونحن نصلي في الذكرى التاسعة لروح الشهيد النائب والوزير الراحل ايلي حبيقة نردد بايمان وخشوع ووقار ما قاله النبي أيوب رغم كل المصائب التي حلت عليه فيما كان الشيطان يحاول جاهداً إيقاعه في التجربة دون أن يتمكن من أن يحقق هدفه اللعين هذا كون إيمان أيوب بربه كان قوياً وراسخاً: "عرياناً خرجت من بطن أمي، وعرياناً أعود إلى هناك، الرب أعطى والرب أخذ تبارك اسم الرب". (ايوب01/21).

يقول السيد المسيح: "أَنَا هُوَ الْقِيَامَةُ وَالْحَيَاةُ. مَنْ آمَنَ بِي، وَإِنْ مَاتَ فَسَيَحْيَا" (يوحنا 25/11). إن تعلقنا بلبناننا الحبيب حتى الشهادة يعزينا ويقوي إيماننا ويرسخ الرجاء في نفوسنا ويساعدنا على تقبل غياب الشهداء الأبرار برضوخ كامل لمشيئة أبينا السماوي فهم لا يموتون بل يبقون أحياء في وجداننا وضمائرنا وقلوبنا وعقولنا وفي كل عمل نقوم به يهدف لخدمة ومساعدة الآخرين الذين هم بحاجة إلينا.

يقول الشاعر: "ما استحق أن يعيش، من عاش لنفسه فقط". لذلك فالشخص المؤمن يجد لذته في أن يحيا لأجل غيره، عملاًً بقول الرب، "تحب قريبك كنفسك" (متى39/22). ولهذا يحب كل الناس من أعماق قلبه وتكون محبته للآخرين محبة عملية حسبما قال الرسول يوحنا: "يا أبنائي، لا تكن محبتنا بالكلام أو باللسان بل بالعمل والحق". (1يو18:3).

هذه المحبة العظيمة، والله هو محبة، تتميز بالعطاء والبذل والتفاني سواء من الناحية الجسدية، أو الناحية الروحية. لذلك فإن الشخص المؤمن والمعطاء والصادق هو بطبيعته إنسان نقي وتقي وشفاف وصادق ومحب يخاف الله الذي خلقه على صورته ومثاله.

هذا الإنسان يجهد بفرح كبير ليكون خادماً يخدم غيره في كل المجالات، لا لأنه مطالب بهذا، وإنما لأن الخدمة جزء من طبيعته ونفسيته وثقافته، ومكون أساسي من مكونات كيانه الإيماني. في خدمة الآخرين يشعر بالحب ويتغذى روحياً من تقديم الخدمات أكثر مما يغذي غيره بها. وإذا كانت الخدمة هي من عمل الملائكة (عبرانيين14:1)، فكم بالأولى البشر. وقد أعطانا السيد المسيح المثال الأبلغ في هذا الشأن إذ قال: "ومن أراد أن يكون الأول فيكم، فليكن لكم عبدا، وهكذا ابن الإنسان جاء لا ليخدمه الناس، بل ليخدمهم ويفدي بحياته كثيراً منهم". (متى 20/27 و28)

When the "legitimate press" lets you down, fails to report on vital news, or feeds the people slanted reports, then the alternative press is Lebanon's only hope... April 30 - May 1, 2011 -- Commentary: Obama and race baiting

Many Americans would agree that racism has no place in American political discourse. However, the noise from Barack Obama's pathetic cheerleaders and lickspittles and popinjays, all political hacks who parrot the White House, Democratic National Committee, and DNC affiliates' lines that any investigation of Obama or his family's background amounts to racism, is laughable.

While few would argue that Donald Trump is a shameless self-promoter and egomaniac, equally outrageous are the racism claims from real life versions of "Max Headroom" -- Ed Schultz, Rachel Maddow, Lawrence O'Donnell, Chris Matthews, Anderson Cooper, Piers Morgan, Thom Hartmann, and the rest of the Obama peanut gallery -- who claim that to raise any issue about Obama's past is patent racism. News to all these corporate promoters of Obama: racism charges by Obama's gang amounts to blatant ignorance of serious academic and journalistic research of Obama and his family's history.

And Obama, himself, has engaged in racist tactics in answering his critics. Obama and his wife appeared on Oprah Winfrey's Chicago-based show to decry those who question his past as a "sideshow" and "carnival barkers." It is clear what demographic Obama was trying to stir up. Ratings show that daytime broadcast television is largely viewed by stay-at-home mothers: white, Hispanic, and African-American. However, the Oprah show attracts a majority of at-home African-American women. Furthermore, Oprah has been a long-time promoter of Obama since his days in Chicago and Illinois politics. Not even Larry King could come up with questions for Obama that were more softball in nature.

Obama had the opportunity to put to rest the controversy arising from his short-form Hawaii Certificate of Live Birth. He did not. The politically-correct race designation of "African" vice "Negro" was carried over from the short to long form certificate. Barack Obama, Sr. could have told the Honolulu registrar of birth that he was a "Martian" in 1961, but his race would have still been listed under the official Department of Health, Education, and Welfare and U.S. Census Bureau designation as "Negro," not "African." The continued term on the long-form certificate indicates that both short and long form documents are patent forgeries.

For those forgers who decided that "Negro" was too racist to include on Obama's certificates of live birth, it should be pointed out that in 1967, Dr. Martin Luther King said the following: "Discrimination is a hellhound that gnaws at Negroes in every waking moment of their lives to remind them that the lie of their inferiority is accepted as truth in the society dominating them." In his autobiography, Malcolm X wrote, "The American Negro never can be blamed for his racial animosities -- he is only reacting to 400 years of the conscious racism of the American whites."

Several individuals, including this editor, do not doubt that Barack Obama was born in Hawaii. However, Obama's time in Indonesia where he was adopted by Indonesian national Lolo Soetoro and was known as "Barry Soetoro" is where the questions begin on Obama's eligibility to hold the office of President. If Obama had obtained Indonesian citizenship, obtained an Indonesian passport, entered Occidental College as an Indonesian national on a scholarship reserved for foreign students, obtained a British passport on the account of Barack Obama, Sr.'s British Commonwealth citizenship, Obama, whether or not he was operating as a Central Intelligence Agency asset or agent, is not constitutionally eligible to be the President of the United States. It is the Constitution of the United States that determines who may serve as President, not Donald Trump, white racists, Tea Party activists, Obama's political snake oil salesmen, or anyone else. If dual nationality now permits someone to serve as President, what does that portend for the future? There are a number of U.S. politicians who are eligible for and may hold foreign citizenship. Dual U.S.-Israelis serve as a case in point.

It is being reported that notes from 1968 point to Robert F. Kennedy's convicted assassin, Sirhan Sirhan, being led into the Ambassador Hotel on that fateful June 1968 Democratic primary night by a mysterious woman wearing a polka-dot dress. Sirhan and his lawyer claim that the woman was a controller of some nature. In the years subsequent to Bobby Kennedy's assassination, the CIA's MK-ULTRA mind control and targeted assassination program has been revealed in declassified documents. 1968 was the year after Stanley Ann Dunham, who appears to be just as mysterious as the polka-dot dress clad woman in the Ambassador Hotel, took Barack Obama, Jr. to Indonesia, where the CIA and Lolo Soetoro's Indonesian army were mopping up opponents to the 1965 anti-Communist coup by targeting them for assassination. Stanley Ann Dunham Soetoro's "field anthropology" work in Java appears to have been a part of the CIA's use of anthropologists for covert operations, anthropology activities exposed and condemned in the Dr. Ralph Beals report that was commissioned by the American Anthropological Association and published in 1968.

The 1960s were the heyday of the CIA's top secret mind control operations and CIA Director Richard Helms referred to the University of Hawaii in a 1971 memo as one of Langley's long-standing top five universities for the CIA's "behavioral science" program. Not only do the paths of Stanley Ann Dunham, Barack Obama, Sr., and Lolo Soetori crisscross at the University of Hawaii, but so does that of Stanley Armour Dunham, Obama's grandfather. After all, it was Mr. Dunham who welcomed Barack Sr. to Honolulu airport as part of the CIA's Airlift Africa program to train young Africans to be future CIA-controlled leaders in newly-independent African states like Kenya, which became independent of Britain in 1963.

It is the fact that Stanley Ann Dunham may have been a virtual CIA "baby machine" and that Barack Obama, Sr. may not even be President Obama's father that is also at the center of the Obama controversy, minus the conventional birth certificate debate. As a young woman, Ann Dunham seemed to have such a penchant for having babies with Third World nationals like Obama, Sr. and Soetoro, there is the potential that MK-ULTRA or an affiliated CIA program was seriously at play. Informed WMR sources have also pointed to the fact that young Ann accompanied her father on a CIA mission to Cuba in 1960 and that Obama's father may have been an Afro-Cuban she met during the trip. We'll never know where Ann Dunham was prior to 1968 -- her passport records prior to that year were "inadvertently" destroyed by the State Department.

Hawaii Republican state senator Sam Slom has indicated that Obama was, indeed, born in Honolulu but questions who Obama's father is. The birth certificate controversy is a side issue. The answers to Obama are found in his, his mother's, and his maternal grandparent's employment history, security clearances held, passport records, Obama Jr.'s Connecticut-issued Social Security Number, Occidental College financial aid files, and Occidental and Columbia University academic records. The CIA is likely manufacturing more forgeries that will be released as we approach the 2012 presidential election and the Obama cheerleaders in the corporate media will praise them as "transparent" and "authentic."

The fact that an only child like Ann Dunham would have more Third World penises inserted in her than a urinal at the United Nations Delegate's Lounge should raise eyebrows, especially considering her father's relationship with the CIA and her own later relationship with the CIA through her employment with the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) and the Ford Foundation.

Barack Obama, Jr. is a political chimera who uses his race and his religious history to his (and likely, the CIA's) advantage. At Occidental in Los Angeles, Obama rattled off Marxist dogma, thus ingratiating to some, but not all, Marxists and leftists on campus. Some Marxists considered Obama too doctrinaire, and like Lee Harvey Oswald's pro-Castro rhetoric in New Orleans, was not fully trusted by those he claimed to have political affinity. At his post-Columbia employer, the CIA front company Business International Corporation, Obama was aloof and cool, being more "white" than "black" and totally immersing himself into the corporate expensive business suit culture a block from United Nations headquarters. After arriving in south Chicago, Barry Obama was the hip African-American trying to amass as much intelligence as he could on the foreign (including Libyan) connections of the El Rukn gang, New Black Panther Party, and Nation of Islam centered in the blighted neighborhood. While in Indonesia and Pakistan in the early 1980s, it was Barry Soetoro, the dark-skinned guy with the Indonesian last name and Muslim school education in Jakarta who re-established links with his old pals from Jakarta and Pakistani students from Occidental. As an Illinois politician, it was Barack Obama, Jr., the son of a white mother and Kenyan father who stressed his African-American roots. At the onset of his presidency, it was Barack Hussein Obama, Jr., who stressed his Muslim links through his alleged Kenyan father and Indonesian step-father Lolo Soetoro, who reached out to the Arab and Muslim worlds in heralded speeches in Cairo and Istanbul.

After eight disastrous years of George W. Bush and Dick Cheney, Barack Hussein Obama, Jr. and his multi-cultural, multi-religious, bi-racial, and international background was viewed as a prescription to cure America of policies implemented during its sharp turn toward fascism at home and imperialism abroad. However, Obama and his continued support for neo-conservative policies shows him to have been a mere placebo designed to hoodwink the American people and people around the globe.

President Obama calls those who want a full accounting of his and his family's background "side show" acts and "carnival barkers" to an audience of fawning Oprah Winfrey fans. That does not represent racism to Obama's cheerleaders? Obama staffers, schooled in the thuggish politics of Chicago, threaten this editor, the San Francisco Chronicle, Larry Sinclair and anyone else who criticizes Obama proving that Obama, just like Richard Nixon, does not hesitate to browbeat those who delve into his chicanery.

Bashar Assad, the assassin in Chief of the odious White House Murder INC, in the Levant....since January 24th 2002.........it is coming fast....

Daraa is a dusty small town in the Southeastern corner of Syria. Until very recently, its only claim to fame was it being mentioned in the diaries of the legendary Lawrence of Arabia. In the last few days the derelict town has become the center of the anti-Assad demonstrations in Syria. Some people, the exact number of which is not known, were killed; many others were jailed. The rioters destroyed the statue of former President Hafiz Assad and the office of Syria's cell phone company, owned by Rami Makhlouf, Bashar Assad's maternal cousin. The regime counter-attack is led by elements of the Presidential Guard, commanded by Maher Assad, the younger brother of Bashar.

While all this happening, the town and the region of the Houran, of which it is the capital, suffer from a severe shortage of water. Little wonder, that the poverty-stricken Houranis finally raised the banner of rebellion, reacting to a situation which is common throughout Syria, and not only in their own region.

Let's start with water. Syria is on the verge of a catastrophic water crisis, caused by years of drought and total neglect by the government of the water sources. Over a million starving and thirsty peasants, mainly Kurds from the North-east of Syria, but also Sunnis from the Houran and Druze from the neighboring Jabal region were forced to abandon their traditional way of life and migrated to the metropolitan areas, particularly the Capital, Damascus. This is a time-bomb that is waiting to explode, and the Houran riots are just the beginning. The traditionally belligerent Kurdish population of the Jazeera region are next in line, and possibly also the urban Kurdish population of Damascus, Aleppo and Hamah.

For years the Syrian regime was warned that the water problem is potentially explosive, but the pride and ineptitude of the government prevented any serious effort to deal with the situation. Overall the Syrian economy has taken a free fall for many years, the inevitable result of failed Socialist policies, as well as rampant corruption. Corruption in Syria is endemic and closely-related to the ruling Assad clan, as well as to a group of other families which have played a leading role in the regimes of both Assad presidents. The Tlas family is a case in mind. Mustafa Tlas was the Minister of Defense for almost 40 years. His family is rumored to accumulate many millions of dollars in a country as poor as Syria. On top of all, the Assad family controls enormous amount of wealth, and Rami Makhlouf mentioned above, is the businessman-in-chief of the family, much the same as Gamal Mubarak was under his disgraced father.

The Assad clan has been plagued for many years by internal dissent, the details of which could provide for more than one soap opera, that will overshadow a series like Dynasty and Dallas. Bashar's uncle, Rifa't Assad was the executioner-in-chief of the regime, until he fell out with Hafiz and was exiled. His lifestyle in Europe proves that he was never too far from the state coffers. Maher Assad, a cowardly murderer and an assassin who is entrusted with the task of putting down the current rebellion, is reputed to have a short fuse. In one famous incident, he shot and injured his brother-in-law, Assef Shawkat who is married to his sister bitch Bushra, and himself one of the regime's assassins....and the CEO of the odious White House Murder INC, in the Levant....since January 24th 2002.....

Still, in an emergency, the clan closes ranks and acts together to defend the power and the wealth. It is a typical reaction of regimes like that. The Kaddafi clan in Libya and the Saddam Hussein in Iraq, are other notable examples. The history of the Assad Presidents clearly indicates that the Libyan carnage will be dwarfed by what will unfold in Syria , when the regime will be pushed with its back to the wall.

That is going to happen rather sooner than later, as the combination of economic deprivation, the ever-existing confessional hatreds and the resentment to the Assad clan will push many more desperate Syrians to the streets and with it to the inevitable blood-letting. According to reliable sources, the military already used choppers against the protesters In Daraa.

And the longer Gaddafi clings to power there, the more committed the regime here becomes to following the Libyan model, sources in Damascus said.

“The problem is that the regime has been committing crimes for decades, so they can’t reform and open up — it is impossible,” said the student, referring to the combined five decades of rule by father and son Hafez and Bashar al-Assad. “If they do, then everyone will see their crimes — the disappearances, the theft, all of it. So they’ll fight to the end.”

He added: “Bashar is much worse than Gaddafi — and crazier. Don’t be fooled by the doctor thing (the president is a former eye doctor). He’s willing to do anything.”

So, what about a no-fly zone in Syria?

I, for one, do not hold my breath. Syria, as we know, is just a marginal oil producer....and a founding partner of the infamous White House Murder INC, in the Levant dating back to the 1970s.....

جدار الصمت يتداعى والشعب السوري سيُشعل الثورة

لا شك ان مشهد خروج مئات والاف المتظاهرين هاتفين بالتغيير والاصلاح والديمقراطية كان اشبه بتاسع المستحيلات

وضرب من ضروب الجنون قبل اشهر في سوريا.

اليوم ومع سقوط حواجز الخوف في كل ارجاء العالم العربي، خرج اهل الشام عن صمتهم. واسقطوا كل الاقنعة بوجه جبروت النظام الحديدي الممسك بزمام الامور منذ عقود. ليفتحوا بأيديهم بوابة سجن اوصد بالاغلال، وليساهموا بانتفاضتهم الناشئة بقدوم ربيع سياسي الى مؤسساتهم وشوارعهم وبيوتهم ومدارسهم واجيالهم، انه ربيع الياسمين التي بدأت براعمه الصغيرة بالازهار.

بشار الاسد يبدو مربكاً في هذه الاثناء. يراقب المشهد الداخلي المتفجّر في بلاده. يحاول قدر المستطاع التعتيم على حجم الحدث. يصارع التغيير بدم بارد. يراقب ما يجري في العالم العربي ويسأل نفسه: "هل حان دوري؟".

خمس عقود من حالة الطوارىء, بطالة ومعاناة اقتصادية, قمع وظلم, ومشاركة ممنوعة, وانتخابات معلّبة, واعتقالات بالجملة... اليوم حان وقت الخروج عن الصمت والانتفاض على الاستبداد.

الاعلام السوري الخشبي تغاضى بشكل تام عما يجري من تظاهرات وتحركات في ارجاء البلاد، اذ خرجت صحيفة "البعث" التابعة للادارة السورية البعثية يوم الجمعة الماضي بخبر رئيسي على صفحتها الاولى تحت عنوان: "استغلوا تجمع المواطنين قرب المسجد العمري، مندسّون يلحقون اضراراً في الممتلكات العامة والخاصة في درعا".

التعامي عن حقيقة ما يجري يثير الغثيان ويكشف تعاطي النظام مع هذه الاحداث من خلال الشائعات ومحاولة التخدير الجماعي لذر الرماد في العيون، اذ يتم تسويق مقولة ان "عملية الإصلاح في البلاد ماضية وتسير بخطا منتظمة يرافقها حملة كبيرة لمكافحة كل أشكال الفساد، وأن كل ما يقلق السوريين أو ما يمكن أن يقلقهم يتم بحثه علناً وفي بعض الحالات مباشرة مع بشار الأسد الذي يتابع شؤون المواطنين وهمومهم بشكل دائم". انها بالفعل اعلى درجات النفاق والكذب على الشعوب.

والمضحك في الامر، فقد رأت صحف النظام ان الأفلام التي يتم تصويرها من الهواتف وبثها على موقع «يو تيوب» هي عبارة عن مجموعة اكاذيب لا ترقى الى الحقيقة، اذ اعتبرت ان اغلبيتها مزيف وتستخدم صور قديمة لتجمعات في «سوق الحميدية» وأمام سفارتي مصر وليبيا لدمجها مع صور أخرى وإخراج فيلم على أنه من تظاهرات الاحتجاج. كما تم تجنيد فضائيات لبث الأخبار الكاذبة وأخرى لبث الفتنة والطائفية في مجتمع كان ولا يزال وسيبقى رافضاً لأي خطاب طائفي ولأي فتنة يمكن أن يراهن عليها من يبث كل هذه السموم على قنواته.

اصابع الاتهام لم توفر روّاد الانترنت، اذ اتهمت "بعض المجموعات المتطرفة من خارج سوريا، والقريبة من عبد الحليم خدام وبعض السفارات الاجنبية بأنها تساهم في تأجيج الحملة والزام الدول الغربية باصدار مواقف تدين سوريا، واثارة الشك في نفوس السوريين انفسهم بأن ما يحصل له ابعاد خطيرة جداً".

نظرية المؤامرة على الدولة الحامية لشعبها وقائدها استمرت في اوساط النظام التي هاجمت موقعي "تويتر" و"الفايسبوك"، زاعمةً ان بعض الجهات المنظمة تبث اخباراً كاذبة لتحريض الناس على التظاهر و«مناصرة إخوانهم المهددين». حيث اتهمت مواقع الانترنت ببث اخبار كاذبة عن محاصرة درعا من قبل الجيش، وعن عمليات إنزال وترهيب للمواطنين "سرعان ما أثبت عقلاء درعا أن لا أساس لها من الصحة".

"أن كل ما ينشر لا يمت للحقيقة بصلة مصممين على ألا يخرب حياتهم وأمنهم أي مجموعة مهما كانت مطالبها لأنهم على ثقة بأن أي مطلب يمكن الحصول عليه من خلال الحوار وإيصال الصوت إلى أعلى المستويات"... هكذا اراد التلفزيون السوري ان يطئمن شعبه الذي لم يعد يصدّق اكاذيب النظام بعد اليوم.

وقد وصلت حدود الوقاحة الى القول انه " تم استقبال المتظاهرون في بأحذية المصلين في الأموي قبل أن يخرجوا وتفرقهم قوات الأمن وكذلك الأمر في حمص أما في بانياس فأخذت التظاهرة الطابع السلمي ولم يقترب منها أحد".

وفي تهديد واضح لمن يطالب بالتغيير، يختم احد "كتبة" المقالات" في احدى الصحف السورية: "ليتذكر الجميع أننا نتعامل هنا مع مجموعات مهنية للغاية تدرك جيداً ما تقوم به من خطوات وهي بحاجة إلى مواجهة شاملة من كل المجتمع السوري".

ان مسيرة التغيير يا بشار اسد بدأت بالفعل، ولا عودة الى الوراء. ولا يفيدكم ارسال الوفود الحكومية، وانقضاض الاجهزة الامنية بلباس مدني على الناس. لان زمن الصمت انتهى، ونظرية المؤامرة والتخويف والترهيب والتعتيم لم تعد تجدي نفعاً... لقد حان دور سوريا

إعتبر الكاتب والباحث غسان الشامي أنّ حادثة جسر الشغور في سوريا من قبل الزمر الأمنية الطائفية لم تكن متوقعة بهذا الوجه المقيت "الحقد الذي حصل بعد صدور عفو رئاسي وفشل مؤتمر "انطاليا" في تركيا من قبل المتآمرين على سوريا مشهد مريه يجب ضربه بيد من حديد. أهالي حماه طالبوا بالعفو وحصلوا عليه ولكنّ التظاهرة في حماه بربط وتعليق أحد رجال الأمنيين على الأعمدة وبكلام طائفي امر غير مقبول".

لبعض المعارضة السورية "احد الجهابذة منكم قال أنّه لا يحقّ لمن سكت عن مائة شهيد ان يفتعل الصدمة، وكأنّ هناك موت جميل وآخر بشع. وصور قتل المحتجين لرجل أمني في جسر الشغور وجرّ القتلى بالسيارات ورميهم في مياه نهر العاصي هو نفسه النموذج الذي حصل في لبنان في مخيم نهر البارد".

"جملة أمور حصلت بالأمس أولها هجوم على مقرات حزبية والذي قتل باحداها 62 شخصاً، ومع اتصال الأهالي بالجيش بغية التدخّل حصل كميناً لهم، والقتلى الذين استشهدوا تمّ التمثيل بجثثهم".

سئل الشامي عن مصدر قوة الإرهابيين وسبب استرخاء الجيش السوري في منطقة استراتجية بالقرب من الحدود التركية أجاب: "هذه المنطقة التي تقع بين منطقة حلب واللاذقية هي بؤرة تاريخية للأخوان المسلمين في سوريا وهي على مقربة من تركيا ولا يتواجد بقربها الجيش على إعتبار أنّ الحالة بين الدولتين هي مريحة حتى اللحظة الراهنة، والدليل على ذلك هو ذهاب 35 جريحاً من الإرهابيين تجاه تركيا".

يضيف الشامي "نعم هناك تهريب اسلحة من داخل الحدود التركية والأهمّ من ذلك هو تدريبهم على استخدامه وعلى تنفيذ الكمائن. وبالتالي التلطّي وراء شعار "سليمة" – "سلمية" بات مكشوفاًُ. يجب التمييز بين المطالب الإصلاحية المحقّة وبين من يركب موجة الإصلاح لتنفيذ "اجندة" تبدأ بالقتل وتنتهي بتفتيت سوريا".

ثعلبة الأخوان المسليمن
وإعتبر الشامي انّ "الأخوان المسلمين" يكذبون في ادعاءاتهم "الكذب يبدأ من مصر وينتهي في سوريا. في مصر يدعون أنّهم لا يريدون السلطة وهم لاهثون وراءها. في مصر كانوا يختبئون وراء مقولة الصراع العربي الإسرائيلي وهم ساكتون وصامتون على ما يحدث في غزة وعن ثروة الغاز المصري. في سوريا مع بداية الأحداث أشاروا الى أنّهم وراء الإحتجاجات.

هناك "ثعلبة" من قبلهم. في مؤتمر انطاليا معظم المتواجدين لا يمثلون أحداً داخل سوريا فقط هناك تواجد لجماعة الأخوان المسلمين وأحد ممثلي العشائر العربية. وثعلبة الأخوان المسلمين في "انطاليا" كانت فعالة حتى مع صدور بيان علماني وإدعائهم أنهم ليسوا معنيين بذلك. ماذا يمثّل عبد الرزاق عيد في سوريا وماذا يمثّل عمّار عبد الحميد في الشارع الدمشقي طالما لا يؤثر على والدته الممثلّة "منى واصف"؟ ماذا يمثّل انس العبدي أو غيرهم؟ لا شيء على الإطلاق الذين يمثلون شيئاً ما، هم الأخوان المسلمون فقط. وانحرافهم الى العمل المسلّح جاء بعد فشلهم الشعبي وهذا ما يضرّ سلباً بعمل المعارضة الحقيقية المتجّهة نحو الحوار في سوريا امثال ميشال كيلو وحسين عداد وعارف دليلة وبرهان غليون".

ادونيس وميشال كيلو يشتمان!
يتابع الشامي حديثه "تصوروّا ان "ادونيس" المتواجد خارج سوريا منذ العام 1955 غير مقبول من قبلهم ويُشتم لأنّه رفض إنطلاق الثورات من الجوامع! المؤرخ الكبير فراس سواح والمعارض النبيل ميشال كيلو شتما من قبلهما. في المحصلة النهائية الوقت نفذ امام سوريا تجاه من يحمل السلاح لأنّه لا يجوز السماح لهذا النموذج العصاباتي من الإستمرار. ومن يحمل سلاحاً ضدّ شعبه وجيشه يجب قطع يده بقوة رغم سير قانون الطوارئ والعفو والأحزاب والإعلام مجراهم الطبيعي. مسلك هؤلاء العصابة المتخفية هي الثعلبة. والقيادة السورية لم تكن لتؤمن بالحلول الأمنية في بادئ المر لأنها تعتقد أنّ الدم يجرّ دماً، ولكن ماذا تفعل امام افعال هذه العصابات التكفيرية؟".

وإعتبر الشامي انّ الصراع في سوريا ليس صراعاً مذهبياً "السنّة في منطقة جبلة اقلية ولم يتعرضوا لحادثة طائفية واحدة. الناس في بانياس واللاذقية كما في مختلف المناطق والمحافظات السورية موحدّة ضدّ الإرهاب وهم أخذوا خيارهم الى جانب الدولة والدفاع عن النظام. هناك مساعي لأخذ الشعب السوري الى المنحى الطائفي ولكن وعي القياة السورية عطّل تلك الألغام، وأوراق التكفيريين استنفدت في سوريا ولم يتجاوب معها الشعب السوري".

اردوغان يدافع عن الأرمن!
وعن مواقف تركيا تجاه سوريا هزأ الشامي بكلام اردوغان الحريص على الأرمن في وسوريا والأكراد والشركس. "تصرّف الأتراك أشبه بالمهزلة ينسجم مع الضخّ التحريضي لقناة الجزيرة والقرضاوي والسعودية، ورغم ذلك لم ينجرّ السوريون للفتنة فبقيت القلائل محصورة في مناطق الحدودية، ومنطقة جسر الشغور سيتمّ تنظيفها من هؤلاء الإرهابيين كما نُظفّت بؤر امنية أخرى".
وحول موضوع تورّط تركيا في احداث سوريا رأى الشامي أنّ الأولى استطاعت من خلال البوابة السورية التحوّل من دولة عثمانية الى دولة صديقة وشقيقة "تركيا مارست سياسة "الثعلب" مع سوريا وتأكيدي على "الواوي" وليس الذئب مرده أنّه في الحالة الثانية بامكانك توقّع الأفعال أمّا في الأولى فهناك إستخدام للمكر والرياء. الذي لا يقرأ تاريخ لا يمكن توقّع المستقبل.

حزب العدالة والتنمية غيّر اسمه اكثر من مرّة للحفاظ على الحكم ويمارس الديماغوجية في الحياة السياسية في تركيا واكثر من يمثلّ هذه السياسة هو رجب الطيّب اردوغان. عام 1998 يقول اردوغان "مساجيننا ثكناتنا. قبضنا خوذاتنا. مآذننا حرابنا. والمصلوّن جنودنا. وهذا الجيش المقدّس يحرس ديننا".

يعقّب الشامي "نحن أمام حالة تتلطّى بالإسلام وتلبس الكرافات وهم في حقيقتهم جماعة من الأخوان المسلمين. وعندما حاول امير قطر بالإتفاق مع تركيا مفاوضة الرئيس الأسد في بداية الأحداث على إعطاء نصف السلطة للأخوان المسلمين ثبت لنا أنّ تركيا ما يهمّها من الشأن الإصلاحي هو فقط المتعلّق بالأخوان المسلمين. وهمّ اردوغان فقط شتم رئيس الحزب الجمهوري في تركيا وريث كمال اتتورك لأنه علوي فقط. اردوغان يشير بسوء الى حوالي 18 مليون علوياً في تركيا نتيجة تعصبّه".

يفسّر الشامي التركيبة الديمغرافية داخل تركيا: "علويون لواء اسكندرون يتبعون نفس تقاليد علويي سوريا. العلويون المسماة "كازاباش" أو "الرؤوس الحمر" هم من عماد الحركة الاتتوركية في تركيا ويشكلون نسبة كبيرة من ضباط الجيش التركي ولهم شعائر الى حدٍّ ما مغايرة عن علوية سوريا. دون ان ننسى تواجد حوالي 3 ملايين كردي علوي في تركيا من بينهم رئيس حزب العمال الكردستاني عبدالله اوجلان. لهذا السبب الكلام الذي يخرج من حزب التنمية والعدالة واردوغان ودووود اوغلو في ظاهره نصحٌ لسوريا في باطنه سمٌ لسوريا، والاّ لماذا لا يطبقّون الديمقراطية داخل تركيا مع الأكراد والأرمن؟ لماذا لم يستنكروا قتل السوريين في الجولان من قبل الجيش الإسرائيلي؟ لماذا التذكير بمذهب الرئيس السوري ومذهب زوجته؟ وكلّ هذا الإسهاب في تصاريح الأتراك يكشف تورطهّم الكبير في احداث سوريا".

الأحد المقبل
وعن الاكراد في سوريا رأى الشامي انّ العلاقة السائدة بينهم وبين النظام هي ايجابية وما قدمّه الرئيس الأسد لهم لم يقدمّه رجب الطيّب اردوغان. "المعركة الفاصلة بوجود سوريا او عدم وجودها في الحالة السياسية التركية هي يوم الأحد المقبل في "ديار بكر" حيث يتواجد الثقل الكردي داخل تركيا. هذه المدينة الذي ارتكب الأتراك المجازر الضخمة بحقّ الأكراد والأرمن والأشوريين والسريان والكلدان... مجازر 1915 العثمانية لم تطل الأرمن فقط بل معظم شعوب الحضارة السريانية في تلك المناطق الواسعة. معركة كسر العضم في 12 الشهر الحالي ما بين حزب العدالة والتنمية والأكراد ستبدأ في مدينة "ديار بكر" لأنّه كثيرون من الأكراد يعتبرون أنّ اردوغان قد كذب عليهم في موضوع الإصالحات وهم لن يقبلوا بلدغهم من الجحر مرتين وتاجيل مطالبهم الى ما بعد الإنتخابات، وفي الحقيقة التجنيس الأخير للأكراد داخل سوريا هم من اصول تركية لأنّ مجيئهم حصل في مطلع الستينات... في النهاية تركيا ستدفع ثمن تدخلها في دول الجوار لأنّ اردوغان ليس السلطان سليم الأول ولا مجال لمعركة مرج دابق ثانية في التاريخ ولا الرئيس الأسد هو سلطان المماليك عام 1516. هذه الأحداث طويت منذ حوالي 500 عام".

اضاف الشامي "ولا يمكن لجنبلاط ان يكون فخر الدين الأول لينتظر نتيجة أحداث معركة "مرج دابق"... وما يمثل حالياً لدى شعوب المنطقة وذهنهم العام هو جمال باشا السفاح. فمن يظنّ في تركيا أنّ ايام الولايات أو "الإيالة" ستعود اظنّه أبلهاً".

ميقاتي "جيكوندا"
وحول تشكيل الحكومة رأّى الشامي أنّ رمي المسؤولية على العماد عون إنكشف لأنّ الموضوع ليس على علاقة بالداخل "اعتقد أنّ الرئيس ميقاتي منذ بداية تشكيل الحكومة يريد ان يكون "جيكوندا" عند كلّ الأطراف ولايوجد الاّ "جيكوندا" واحدة وابتسامة مواربة واحدة على اعتبار أنّ هذا الغموض بناء لكنّه في الحقيقة غموض هدّام. إمّا ميقاتي يستطيع تشكيل الحكومة دون ارادة مكلفيه وإمّا عليه الإستماع لهم. فليضع ورقة "الطرنيبط التي لديه ويشكّل حكومته".

وكشف الشامي في حديثه الى الـ"OTV" انّ شقيق رئيس المكلّف "طه ميفاتي" كان في دمشق وحصل تدخلاً من كثيرين لطلب تدخّلاً سورياً في الشأن الحكومي ولم يحصل "ما يحصل الآن هو إنتظار للمشهد السوري. فيلتمن أقنعهم بالإنتظار بعض الشيء. وميقاتي يتقن الإنتظار. ولا يمكن لأي حكومة قادمة ان يسيطر فريق الأقلية النيابية على وزارة الداخلية ولا على وزارة الدفاع ولا على وزارة العدل. هذا الكلام هو نهائي وموجّه الى ميقاتي إن أردت تشكيل الحكومة بهذه الأغلبية عليك تشكيلها وفي حال انقلبت الأكثرية لن تكون رئيساً عليها، وجنبلاط اشبه بصحن "جيلو" يميل الى حيث الثقل وجنبلاط يبني مواقفه على الخوف وأقرب طريق للوصول الى الهدف هو الذهاب تجاهه".

وختم الشامي حديثه بالقول: "الإسرائيليون يهربون الى الامام ويسعون الى خلق القلائل والفتن لإراحة أزمتهم الوجودية، ما حصل في الجولان حراك شعبي طبيعي وخوف اللبنانيين من الأميركيين خوفاً خلبياً صوتياً لا أكثر لأنّه لا يُصرف في ايّ مكان سيما وانّ الجيش الأميركي سيخرج من العراق وافغانستان. سوريا ليست بحاجة لتوجيه رسالة من جولان لإسرائيل، وسوريا تملك من الآدوات العسكرية لإزالة اسرائيل من الوجود ضمن مفهوم حرب شاملة ولا يحتاج الرئيس الأسد بارسال فتية مقاومين الى الجولان".

When men first made war in the air, the imagery that accompanied them was of knights jousting in the sky. Just check out movies like Wings, which won the first Oscar for Best Picture in 1927 (or any Peanuts cartoon in which Snoopy takes on the Red Baron in a literal “dogfight”). As late as 1986, five years after two American F-14s shot down two Soviet jets flown by Libyan pilots over the Mediterranean’s Gulf of Sidra, it was still possible to make the movie Top Gun. In it, Tom Cruise played “Maverick,” a U.S. Naval aviator triumphantly involved in a similar incident. (He shoots down three MiGs.)

Admittedly, by then American air-power films had long been in decline. In Vietnam, the U.S. had used its air superiority to devastating effect, bombing the north and blasting the south, but go to American Vietnam films and, while that U.S. patrol walks endlessly into a South Vietnamese village with mayhem to come, the air is largely devoid of planes.

Consider Top Gun an anomaly. Anyway, it’s been 25 years since that film topped the box-office -- and don’t hold your breath for a repeat at your local multiplex. After all, there’s nothing left to base such a film on.

To put it simply, it’s time for Americans to take the “war” out of “air war.” These days, we need a new set of terms to explain what U.S. air power actually does.

Start this way: American “air superiority” in any war the U.S. now fights is total. In fact, the last time American jets met enemy planes of any sort in any skies was in the First Gulf War in 1991, and since Saddam Hussein’s once powerful air force didn’t offer much opposition -- most of its planes fled to Iran -- that was brief. The last time U.S. pilots faced anything like a serious challenge in the skies was in North Vietnam in the early 1970s. Before that, you have to go back to the Korean War in the early 1950s.

This, in fact, is something American military types take great pride in. Addressing the cadets of the Air Force Academy in early March, for example, Secretary of Defense Robert Gates stated: “There hasn’t been a U.S. Air Force airplane lost in air combat in nearly 40 years, or an American soldier attacked by enemy aircraft since Korea.”

And he’s probably right, though it’s also possible that the last American plane shot down in aerial combat was U.S. Navy pilot Michael Scott Speiker’s jet in the First Gulf War. (The Navy continues to claim that the plane was felled by a surface-to-air missile.) As an F-117A Stealth fighter was downed by a surface-to-air missile over Serbia in 1999, it’s been more than 11 years since such a plane was lost due to anything but mechanical malfunction. Yet in those years, the U.S. has remained almost continuously at war somewhere and has used air power extensively, as in its “shock and awe” launch to the invasion of Iraq, which was meant to “decapitate” Saddam Hussein and the rest of the Iraqi leadership. (No plane was lost, nor was an Iraqi leader of any sort taken out in those 50 decapitation attacks, but “dozens” of Iraqi civilians died.) You might even say that air power, now ramping up again in Afghanistan, has continued to be the American way of war.

From a military point of view, this is something worth bragging about. It’s just that the obvious conclusions are never drawn from it.

The Valor of Pilots

Let’s begin with this: to be a “Top Gun” in the U.S. military today is to be in staggeringly less danger than any American who gets into a car and heads just about anywhere, given this country’s annual toll of about 34,000 fatal car crashes. In addition, there is far less difference than you might imagine between piloting a drone aircraft from a base thousands of miles away and being inside the cockpit of a fighter jet.

Articles are now regularly written about drone aircraft “piloted” by teams sitting at consoles in places like Creech Air Force Base in Nevada. Meanwhile, their planes are loosing Hellfire missiles thousands of miles away in Afghanistan (or, in the case of CIA “pilots,” in the Pakistani tribal borderlands). Such news accounts often focus on the eerie safety of those pilots in “wartime” and their strange detachment from the actual dangers of war -- as, for instance, in the sign those leaving Creech pass that warns them to "drive carefully" as this is “the most dangerous part of your day."

When it comes to pilots in planes flying over Afghanistan, we imagine something quite different -- and yet we shouldn’t. Based on the record, those pilots might as well be in Nevada, since there is no enemy that can touch them. They are inviolate unless their own machines betray them and, with the rarest of imaginable exceptions, will remain so.

Nor does anyone here consider it an irony that the worst charge lodged by U.S. military spokespeople against their guerrilla enemies, whose recruits obviously can’t take to the skies, is that they use “human shields” as a defense. This transgression against “the law of war” is typical of any outgunned guerrilla force which, in Mao Zedong’s dictum, sees immense benefit in “swimming” in a “sea” of civilians. (If they didn’t do so and fought like members of a regular army, they would, of course, be slaughtered.)

This is considered, however implicitly, a sign of ultimate cowardice. On the other hand, while a drone pilot cannot (yet) get a combat award citation for “valor,” a jet fighter pilot can and no one -- here at least -- sees anything strange or cowardly about a form of warfare which guarantees the American side quite literal, godlike invulnerability.

War by its nature is often asymmetrical, as in Libya today, and sometimes hideously one-sided. The retreat that turns into a rout that turns into a slaughter is a relative commonplace of battle. But it cannot be war, as anyone has ever understood the word, if one side is never in danger. And yet that is American air war as it has developed since World War II.

It’s a long path from knightly aerial jousting to air war as... well, what? We have no language for it, because accurate labels would prove deflating, pejorative, and exceedingly uncomfortable. You would perhaps need to speak of cadets at the Air Force Academy being prepared for “air slaughter” or “air assassination,” depending on the circumstances.

From those cadets to Secretary of Defense Gates to reporters covering our wars, no one here is likely to accept the taking of “war” out of air war. And because of that, it is -- conveniently -- almost impossible for Americans to imagine how American-style war must seem to those in the lands where we fight.

Apologies All Around

Consider for a moment one form of war-related naming where our language changes all the time. That’s the naming of our new generations of weaponry. In the case of those drones, the two main ones in U.S. battle zones at the moment are the Predator (as in the sci-fi film) and the Reaper (as in Grim). In both cases, the names imply an urge for slaughter and a sense of superiority verging on immortality.

And yet we don’t take such names seriously. Though we’ve seen the movies (and most Afghans haven’t), we don’t imagine our form of warfare as like that of the Predator, that alien hunter of human prey, or a Terminator, that machine version of the same. If we did, we would have quite a different picture of ourselves, which would mean quite a different way of thinking about how we make war.

From the point of view of Afghans, Pakistanis, or other potential target peoples, those drones buzzing in the sky must seem very much like real-life versions of Predators or Terminators. They must, that is, seem alien and implacable like so many malign gods. After all, the weaponry from those planes is loosed without recourse; no one on the ground can do a thing to prevent it and little to defend themselves; and often enough the missiles and bombs kill the innocent along with those our warriors consider the guilty.

Take a recent event on a distant hillside in Afghanistan’s Kunar Province where 10 boys, including two sets of brothers, were collecting wood for their families on a winter’s day when the predators -- this time American helicopters evidently looking for insurgents who had rocketed a nearby American base -- arrived. Only one of the boys survived (with wounds) and he evidently described the experience as one of being “hunted” -- as the Predator hunts humans or human hunters stalk animals. They “hovered over us,” he said, “scanned us, and we saw a green flash,” then the helicopters rose and began firing.

For this particular nightmare, war commander General David Petraeus apologized directly to Afghan President Hamid Karzai, who has for years fruitlessly denounced U.S. and NATO air operations that have killed Afghan civilians. When an angered Karzai refused to accept his apology, Secretary of Defense Gates, on a surprise visit to the country, apologized as well, as did President Obama. And that was that -- for the Americans.

Forget for a moment what this incident tells us about a form of warfare in which helicopter pilots, reasonably close to the ground (and modestly more vulnerable than pilots in planes), can’t tell boys with sticks from insurgents with guns. The crucial thing to keep in mind is that, no matter how many apologies may be offered afterwards, this can’t stop. According to the Wall Street Journal, death by helicopter is, in fact, on the rise. It’s in the nature of this kind of warfare. In fact, Afghan civilians have repeatedly, even repetitiously, been blown away from the air, with or without apologies, since 2001. Over these years, Afghan participants at wedding parties, funerals, and other rites have, for example, been wiped out with relative regularity, only sometimes with apologies to follow.

In the weeks that preceded the killing of those boys, for instance, a “NATO” -- these are usually American -- air attack took out four Afghan security guards protecting the work of a road construction firm and wounded a fifth, according to the police chief of Helmand Province; a similar “deeply regrettable incident” took out an Afghan army soldier, his wife, and his four children in Nangarhar Province; and a third, also in Kunar Province, wiped out 65 civilians, including women and children, according to Afghan government officials. Karzai recently visited a hospital and wept as he held a child wounded in the attack whose leg had been amputated.

The U.S. military did not weep. Instead, it rejected this claim of civilian deaths, insisting as it often does that the dead were “insurgents.” It is now -- and this is typical -- “investigating” the incident. General Petraeus managed to further offend Afghan officials when he visited the presidential palace in Kabul and reportedly claimed that some of the wounded children might have suffered burns not in an air attack but from their parents as punishment for bad behavior and were being counted in the casualty figures only to make them look worse.

Over the years, Afghan civilian casualties from the air have waxed and waned, depending on how much air power American commanders were willing to call in, but they have never ceased. As history tells us, air power and civilian deaths are inextricably bound together. They can’t be separated, no matter how much anyone talks about “surgical” strikes and precision bombing. It’s simply the barbaric essence, the very nature of this kind of war, to kill noncombatants.

One question sometimes raised about such casualties in Afghanistan is this: according to U.N. statistics, the Taliban (via roadside bombs and suicide bombers) kills far more civilians, including women and children, than do NATO forces, so why do the U.S.-caused deaths stick so in Afghan craws when we periodically investigate, apologize, and even pay survivors for their losses?

New York Times reporter Alissa J. Rubin puzzled over this in a recent piece and offered the following answer: “[T]hose that are caused by NATO troops appear to reverberate more deeply because of underlying animosity about foreigners in the country.” This seems reasonable as far as it goes, but don’t discount what air power adds to the foreignness of the situation.

Consider what the 20-year-old brother of two of the dead boys from the Kunar helicopter attack told the Wall Street Journal in a phone interview: "The only option I have is to pick up a Kalashnikov, RPG [rocket-propelled grenade], or a suicide vest to fight."

Whatever the Taliban may be, they remain part of Afghan society. They are there on the ground. They kill and they commit barbarities, but they suffer, too. In our version of air “war,” however, the killing and the dying are perfectly and precisely, even surgically, separated. We kill, they die. It’s that simple. Sometimes the ones we target to die do so; sometimes others stand in their stead. But no matter. We then deny, argue, investigate, apologize, and continue. We are, in that sense, implacable.

And one more thing: since we are incapable of thinking of ourselves as either predators or Predators, no less emotionless Terminators, it becomes impossible for us to see that our air “war” on terror is, in reality, a machine for creating what we then call “terrorists.” It is part of an American Global War for Terror.

In other words, although air power has long been held up as part of the solution to terrorism, and though the American military now regularly boasts about the enemy body counts it produces, and the precision with which it does so, all of that, even when accurate, is also a kind of delusion -- and worse yet, one that transforms us into Predators and Terminators. It’s not a pretty sight.

So count on this: there will be no more Top Guns. No knights of the air. No dogfights and sky-jousts. No valor. Just one-sided slaughter and targeted assassinations. That is where air power has ended up. Live with it.

In this absolutely fascinating talk, Richard (who often is known as "RMS") begins by a short introduction on the issue of free software, but rapidly switches to his main topic, the history and misuse of the idea of copyright. WASHINGTON, March 8 (UPI) -- The Muslim Brotherhood and other Islamist factions staged hit-and-run attacks against government buildings and officials in the early 1980s and almost succeeded in killing the president of a country that has remained eerily quiet during the geopolitical tsunami that is still sweeping the Arab world. You're supposed to guess which country.

The president was on an official state visit to Mali when he ducked a burst of AK-47 fire and then kicked a hand grenade to one side before hurling himself under a table -- and survived with a few metal fragments in his legs.

Revenge was swift. Hours later, almost 1,000 Islamist prisoners killed in their cells by units loyal to the president's brother, Rifaat.

No sooner did word of the massacre reach Umar Jawwad (aka Abu Bakr), a local guerrilla commander, than messages went out by radio to roof-top snipers to kill government soldiers.

Next Abu Bakr radioed the code for a general uprising in the city. From the minarets the call to prayer became the call to jihad against the government, everything from torching the homes of government officials to attacking police posts and ransacking armories.

The Arab head of state, a former air force chief, decided the time was at hand for massive retaliation, the likes of which the Middle East hadn't seen since the Crusades.

In the first week of February 1982, the president mobilized 12,000 troops, including 200 tanks, all the army's special forces and other elite units and Mukhabarat agents. Through loudspeakers that ringed the city, the government warned that anyone who didn't leave immediately would be considered an insurgent and killed with no further questions.

Syria's President Hafez al-Assad and his brother Rifaat, in command of all Special Forces, decided to level the city of Hama, a Muslim Brotherhood stronghold, by carpet bombing it first. The air bombardment lasted three days. The narrow streets that hampered armored movements were flattened. But when there was still resistance after the blitzkrieg, the Assad brothers ringed Hama with artillery and shelled it until there was very little left.

The few survivors were lined up against walls and executed. Later Rifaat bragged to friends they had killed at least 38,000. It was genocide by any definition.

In 2003, 20 years later, Syrian journalist Subhi Hadidi wrote that the siege of Hama, under the command of Gen. Ali Haydar, lasted 27 days under constant artillery and tank fire before invading it and that up to 40,000 of the city's inhabitants were killed in the siege. Some 15,000 are still missing. And the city was leveled to the ground and rebuilt.

Before Assad staged his 1970 coup, Syria had experienced 21 coups since the end of the French mandate in 1945. Assad clung to power for almost 30 years, including the 1973 defeat by Israel. But his rule was bloody. Both before and after Hama, some 70,000 are estimated to have been killed in dozens of punitive raids against Islamist militants.

On Oct. 23, 1983, a Syrian intelligence service was the prime suspect in the truck bomb attack that killed 242 U.S. Marines in their Beirut barracks and of 58 French soldiers. U.S. President Ronald Reagan immediately decided to evacuate remaining U.S. troops -- and two days later he ordered the invasion of Grenada.

Hafez Assad's son Bashar, a former ophthalmologist trainee living in London, inherited the presidential mantle at 34 after his father died of a heart ailment in 2000. Today life appears to be almost normal. The assassination of Lebanese President Rafik Hariri in 2005 was blamed on one of the Syrian intelligence services but never proved. The international outcry led to the withdrawal of Syria's de facto occupation troops that had originally moved in to protect the Christians against the Muslims in Lebanon's civil war (1975-90).

The civil war lasted 15 years, killed 250,000, wounded 1 million, half of them with lifetime disabilities.

Today, Iran's surrogate Hezbollah rules the Lebanese roost and managed to maneuver its own candidate into the prime minister's job.

How Syria has escaped the current Arab upheaval is probably a function of a tightly run police state. But maybe not much longer.

Messages on an Internet social networking site called for nationwide demonstrations in Syria against President Bashar al-Assad in "a time to be set within days." Some 25,000 people joined the group that brands itself, "The Syrian revolution against Bashar al-Assad 2011."

The organizers called for "peaceful protests" across Syria and other Arab nations to demand the fall of the regime. Now 45, Assad has carefully cultivated his image as a resistance fighter against U.S. imperialism and its Israeli colony.

Syria's constitution allows only Baath Party rule..... But the revolutionary mythology rings hollow and has petered out.....

An UPDATE on EGYPT:

Under the category of fundamentalist organizations in Egypt, there are two main groups: the Muslim Brotherhood (MB) and the Salafi Group. The MB has been going through many internal pressures. On generational bases, it is divided into layers.

The first is the “elders,” who are now most of the members of the leading bodies. These are the guys who lived through the years of (Mehna) i.e. “The Tribulation” of the 60’s. They are generally conservative and emphasize the Islamization of the society versus participating in the political life of Egypt.

The second layer is what is usually described as the 70’s generation. These constitute the middle cadre of the organization (though some of them reached a higher rank). They are usually educated; adopt a mixture of the old doctrine of the organization and a more opened view. They are active in professional unions (lawyers, engineers, doctors, etc) and more popular than the traditional figures in the leadership.

A third layer was in the making before the recent uprising and gained many new members during and after the uprising. These new comers are still not fully indoctrinated; they are now making a lot of noise about the undemocratic nature of the MB’s organizational structure.

The other main Islamist (the Salafis) group is usually underestimated but it is effective and extremely backward. The Salafis did not participate in the uprising. Sheikh Ahmed Farid, one of the most prominent leaders of the group explained this position by saying that democracy is un-Islamic and it is also un-Islamic for boys and girls to demonstrate together. The group believe that Egyptian Copts should pay “Jizya” (that is an additional “capitation” tax paid by non Muslims who live in Muslim societies). This group worked closely with the Secret Police (State Security) during the years of Mubarak in order to confront the MBs. The Salafis believe that the MBs are degrading Islam by working in politics. Some voices tend to dismiss the possibility of this group achieving a good rate of growth in the next few years. While this possibility depends mainly on what will happen in general and in the economic sphere in particular, I think that this group should not be underestimated at all, especially in poor areas. As the road ahead will certainly go through many pumps and twists, a general atmosphere of heavy oppression and economic crisis may very well lead to a speedy advance of this group among desperate segments of the population. The group is relatively small compared to the MBs, nonetheless they are very active now among the bottom layers of the society with some participation of disillusioned ex-members of the MBs.

The communists are almost nonexistent, though there are some attempts to organize. The expected spheres of activities will be the new labor unions which are being formed now and in the universities. They still have a long way to go to have any real influence in the general configuration of the post Mubarak Egypt.

The irony now is that the most active group in this phase of events is the least organized one. These are the Egyptian liberals and democrats, who made a hole in the wall of fear and were stunned to see millions rush through. They have no organization, no leadership structure and no publications of their own other than the social networks on the internet.

Another effective group are the remains of the National Democratic Party (NDP) of Mubarak and his businessmen thugs. Their operations room was divided into two parts. The Shafiq government which has just been forced out, and the State Security forces which just collapsed after protesters burned their offices and the new government had to “freeze” their activities. These two blows may have weakened this camp. But it will be a big mistake to disregard this group. They have been built in over 30 years and they exist in villages, administration, media, universities and everywhere else. They are preparing to run in the next Parliamentary elections. If these elections are held in 3 or 4 months they may win a good portion of the next Parliament. This is why some very influential figures call now for postponing the elections to perhaps next year.

The Supreme Military Council (SMC) which runs the country now does not want to remain in power for long. These 19 Generals have two objectives: to preserve the interests of the military in any future regime and to hand the country to a regime that can provide stability. The “interests” of the military will be preserved in any new regime for the foreseeable future. But the second objective is a bit tricky. Stability can be achieved through a combination of a representative political structure which allows political forces to exercise their rights and implement the rule of law and a comprehensive development plan.

Egyptians now have a good idea about the political system they want, but he economic development plan is still subject to debate. Until now, and due to the influence of the usual economic school of thoughts, there is no plan. A group of young and not very young is doing a good job now in trying to revive Dr Farouq Albaz ideas of a development corridor in the western desert. Al Baz is a NASA scientist and a science professor in Boston. He is becoming very popular now in Egypt. A healthy sign that reveals the thirst of Egyptians for real development.

What will happen next?. The situation is very fluid. But what will happen will be certainly better than what was happening. Things are moving towards a “Turkish Model”. But any model will be meaningless without comprehensive economic development in Egypt. As for the fear that is being marketed in the international media that the MBs are coming, I will just say that they have always been there. They were very active side by side with the Mubarak regime. This regime was unsustainable. Any other similar regime will be unsustainable as well. -- Libya's "opposition" includes "unspecified, unnamed, unidentified 'rebels' of the National Front for the Salvation of Libya (NFSL). These are not innocent 'pro-democracy' protesters...." They seemingly "appeared out of thin air." Who they are isn't explained. NFSL, in fact, was established in 1981 by Sudan's Colonel Jaafer Numieri, a US/Israeli puppet dictator from 1971 - 1985.

-- For decades, CIA front groups have been operating in Libya, "backing armed insurgents and interventions" portrayed as "pro-democracy" movements.

-- Western media is reporting misinformation about events on the ground, including alleged bombings, massacres, and possible nerve gas used. None of it is credible. Libya, in fact, is being attacked. It's responding in self-defense.

-- Vicious propaganda is being used to enlist support for imperial intervention. "US troops have already moved ashore....joining the 'opposition....The US, France and Britain have already set up Bases in Libya." British and American Special Forces are operating out of Benghazi and Tobruck. Other covert US forces have been on the ground for weeks. Nothing humanitarian is planned.

-- More than oil and gas is wanted. So are valued mineral deposits. "Libya has a huge land mass with massive untapped mineral potential (including uranium)," besides known energy resources.

-- Accusing Gaddafi of genocide is malicious and untrue, like other major media fabrications. Their "disinformation frenzy and hysteria knows no bounds." No verifiable evidence exists, but there's plenty proving US genocides in Iraq, Afghanistan, and earlier in other targeted countries, causing many millions of deaths for decades. Western media air brushed them out, including The New York Times, America's lead propaganda instrument.

In "Libya, Getting it Right: A Revolutionary Pan-African Perspective," Gerald Perreira wrote:

"The conflict in Libya is not a revolution, but a counter-revolution. (It's) fundamentally a battle between Pan-African forces on the one hand, who are dedicated to the realization of Qaddafi's vision of a united Africa, and reactionary racist Libyan Arab forces who reject (his) vision of Libya as part of a United Africa."

"For those of us who have lived and worked in Libya, there are many complexities to the current situation that have been completely overlooked by the Western media and 'Westoxicated' analysts who have nothing other than a Eurocentric perspective to draw on....Libya's system and the battle now taking place on its soil, stands completely outside the Western imagination."

As a result, all Western government and media reports lack credibility. They're malicious imperial agitprop, including from top officials, BBC and Al Jazeera, each with its own agenda, all serving Western interests, harmful to Libyans.

A Final Comment

Ongoing events in Libya are familiar. Like many of his past counterparts, Gaddafi's been targeted for removal. For weeks or much longer, covert CIA and Special Forces operatives recruited, funded and armed so-called "opposition forces." They, not Gaddafi, instigated violence, heading for civil war. He responded in self-defense. Doing less would be irresponsible.

Western media portray instigators as victims, saying Gaddafi's waging war on his people. America and Western nations are called white knights, offering "humanitarian intervention" when, if fact, imperial colonization is planned. The longer violence continues, the more false media reports will exaggerate it, enlisting support for another nation to be destroyed to save it.

Afghans, Iraqis, Palestinians, Somalis, Pakistanis, and many other oppressed people understand, victimized by imperial aggression, occupation, exploitation, commiseration, and regular drone attacks murdering innocent men, women and children called militants.

The latest in Afghanistan were nine young children, aged seven to 12, gathering wood in the mountains near their village. They were murdered in cold blood, what's escalating in Libya, being softened up in preparation for colonization and greater harshness.

Remember the US-Iran Contra Scandal back in the 1980s? On the one hand the Reagan administration was threatening all sorts and on the other it was conducting secret arms deals with them.

These are the realities of politics, sadly. The greater conspiracy is that the US and UK trade freely with these countries and will do their best to keep these regimes in power as long as they are willing to do business with the West. Hague and Cameron may be outwardly lending their support to the protesters but that didn't stop them sending in an SAS combat team to spy on the rebels. The UK and Britain will be watching events closely. They need to know which way the wind is blowing before committing themselves. They have to ensure as far as possible that any opposing regime will be willing to honor existing contracts and be willing to continue trade – and that’s a generous estimate of their intentions – the better money is on them supporting the Gaddafi regime with as much intelligence gathering assistance as resources permit.

There was no other reason for the SAS and the Mi6 officer to enter the region by stealth. This wasn’t a diplomatic mission – although there’s a remote chance it might have been the precursor to one.

For some reason The House of Wisdom (or is that Gnosis?) would have us think we don’t support the likes of Gaddafi. To be honest though, : you don’t change regions like this by hoying bombs from the outside, you change the economic fabrics of it....using USAID/CIA, NED, Freedom House/CIA....and a few other bags of tricks.....

Kaddafi - at least for the moment - is a safer option. In terms of the bigger picture at least.

كان العقيد في الامن الخارجي يعرف علاقتي بإبراهيم قليلات وبغيره

لسبب مفهوم عندي اراد العقيد فلان ان يسرّب خبر الاستعانة بكريم بقردوني لفتح خط مع الاسرائيلين الى الخارج، ووجد فيّ فرصة لتسريب الخبر من خلالي بالإيحاء ودون الطلب المباشر. فهمت عليه وفهم عليّ كالعادة. وفي مساء كل يوم كان يصطحبني الى فندق المهاري حيث تم استضافة العميل بقرادوني للإلتقاء به بوصفه مكلفا رسميا المتابعة معه

أمضى بقرادوني أربعة ايام بطرابلس ينقله صاحبي العقيد صباحا الى مقر اللجنة ويعود به للفندق بعد الظهر ويرافقه في التجوال بطرابلس مساء

قدمني العقيد الى بقرادوني بوصفي نسيب له وهززت رأسي مرحبا مع ابتسامة، طبعا لم أتلفظ بلفظة واحدة امام بقردوني طيلة التجوالات الليلية الثلاث معه

والا لإكتشف فورا انني لبناني

كان بقرادوني يتحدث امام العقيد باستمرار مستعيدا ما حصل معه في اللجنة وما قالوا له وبما اخبرهم. وكان يتنقل من قصص الى قصص في عالم المخابرات، وصديقي العقيد الليبي يصطنع الإهتمام والإعجاب وادعاء معرفته بما كان يدور في اللجنة

في اليوم الرابع حضر محاسب من الأمن الخارجي برفقة صديقي العقيد وقدموا لبقرادوني مبلغ خمسين الف دولار وايصالا باستلام المبلغ وقّع عليه بقرادونبي باعتبار هذا إجراء محاسبي روتيني. وقمنا بايصاله الى المرفأ بسيارة صديقي التويوتا الكريسيدا، كان صديقي يقود وبقرادوني في المقعد الامامي يواصل ثرثرته وانا صامت في المقعد الخلفي

توجهت الباخرة الى مالطة ومنها إتصل بقرادوني بصديقة يوبراني لوافيه في ايطاليا بعيدا عن أعين اللبنانيين ليوافيه هناك، ومنها يتابع بقرادوني الى باريس فيمضي اياما عدة ليعود بعدها الى بيروت بعد ان يحصل على رد صديقه الاسرائيلي. وهذا ما تم. وقبض بقرادوني بقية اجره على فتح الاتصال والبالغ 200000 دولار امركي.

من اليوم الاول ومن الليلة الاولى كان صديقي في الامن الخارجي يقفلُ بي عائدا الى حيث اقيم بسيارته. وفي كل ليلة أطلب اليه أن يوصلني إلى مركز البريد للتحدث مع اهلي . كان ينتظرني في الخارج بسيارته. هو كان يعلم انني انقل بالتشفير ( الحكي الملغز) ما يحصل مع بقرادوني الى ابراهيم قليلات، وانا اعلم انه يعلم واعود الى سيارته بعد الاتصال وابادره بالقول والله العيال (اولادي) يسلمون عليك

مرت سنوات وعدتُ الى بيروت والتزمت بيتي واعتبرت موضوع بقرادوني من المواضيع القديمة التي عفا عليها الزمن. الى جاء يوم كان الايرانييون يبحثون عن مخطوفيهم الدبلوماسيين في لبنان خلال الاجتياح الاسرائيلي لبيروت عام 1982 ويصرون على انهم عند الاسرائيلين

ما فاجأني حينها، ان المدعو بقرادوني التقى بالبعثة الايرانية، وتناقلت الصحف قوله ان الايرانيين المفقودين تمت تصفيتهم في لبنان و دفنوا قرب الطريق في المعاملتين .. الخ

فتنبهت الى ان بقرادوني يحاول ان يرفع التهمة عن الاسرائيليين ويلصقها باللبنانيين، وهذا معناه انه الى سنة 2004 لا يزال يتصل بهم

ما صحصحني اليوم للكلام عن الموضوع ، ليس القذافي، بل ما حصل في لبنان هذه الايام فقد ادعى المذكور الجاسوس بقرادوني على الصحافي اللبناني جورج عيد على خلفية اجراء الأخير مقابلة له مع شخص يدعى محمد زهير الصديق متداول اسمه في موضوع اغتيال الحريري، يتهم فيه بقرادوني بشيء ما. .احتجت جمعية صحافيين بلا عنف على دعوى بقرادوني على زميلهم ورأت فيها محاولة لتدجين الصحافة اللبنانية بعد الانقلاب الاخير على "قوى"اسم من غير مسمى 14 آذار

انتصارا لمفاهيم 14 اذار السيادية، قررتُ نشر ما عرفته عن كريم بقرادوني والتقدم بذلك كإخبار لدى الجهات القضائية اللبنانيية (أعلم انها لن تهتم بالموضوع). وعندي شاهدي على هذا الكلام قبل عشرين سنة ،الا وهو ابراهيم قليلات ابو شاكر. وعندما يستتب الوضع في ليبيا سوف اذكر اسم ذاك العقيد في الامن الخارجي ،

Officially known as the Harvey Point Defense Testing Activity, the base which was once a Navy Supply Center, actually serves as a paramilitary training course for the CIA and allied intelligence and paramilitary services, including Israel's Mossad and Britain's Special Air Services (SAS). On march 20, 1998, The New York Times reported that during its existence, Harvey Point trained 18,000 foreign intelligence operatives from 50 different countries.

Among those terrorists trained at Harvey Point were those who worked for the Chilean military junta of General Augusto Pinochet, El Salvador's death squad chief Roberto D'Aubisson, Egypt's General Intelligence Directorate, Katangan secessionist leader Moise Tshombe, Angola's UNITA guerrilla force, Colombian counter-insurgency personnel, Laotian anti-communist paramilitary forces, and Arab cadres who would later join Osama bin Laden's forces fighting against the Soviets in Afghanistan. One can only contemplate how such regulars and irregulars from the far-flung corners of the world reacted to eastern North Carolina cuisine, including the barbecued pork, hush puppies, and steamed crabs.

First used to train anti-Castro Cubans for the Bay of Pigs invasion in 1960, the base has seen Amine Gemayel's Lebanese military intelligence train for the failed March 8, 1985, west Beirut car bombing assassination attempt against Lebanese Shi'a spiritual leader Muhammad Hussein Fadlallah, who was also known to be a leading figure in Hezbollah... Although Fadlallah escaped assassination, the car packed with 440 pounds of dynamite leveled an apartment building and a movie theater, killing 85 innocent people, including women and children, and injuring some 300 others...

As the United Nations Special Tribunal for Lebanon stands ready to indict key members of Lebanese Hezbollah for the February 15, 2005, massive car bombing that took the life of former Lebanese Prime Minister Rafik Hariri, it is noteworthy that it has been the CIA's infamous White House Murder INC, along with its Syro-Lebanese allies and Mossad agents trained at Harvey Point who have specialized in the urban car bombing tactic used so often over the past several decades in Lebanon... And as we previously reported, it was these same elements -- CIA, Mossad, and their Syro-Lebanese assets -- that jointly carried out the Hobeika and Hariri car bombing assassinations....

An article titled "CIA Missions Have Mysterious N.C. Roots" in the June 28, 1978, Virginia-Pilot and Ledger-Star reported that the Harvey Point base, described as an annex of the CIA training base at Camp Peary, Virginia, was being used to train CIA operatives in car bombings. The paper noted that every few days, Navy trucks hauled batches of new passenger vehicles into the base and every few days cars that were totally demolished were trucked out of the base. Some local residents described the vehicles: some had their hoods blown off while others were smashed flat.

In December 1999, a rumbling from the base, which lasted for up to five seconds, was so strong that thousands of people in the region believed it to be an earthquake. The US Geological Survey said it did not register any quakes in the region.

In 2009, the CIA conducted a security survey of the Elizabeth City water plant and found that security controls were lacking. The CIA pressed local officials to beef up security for the plant.

Former CIA operative Robert Baer wrote in his book, "See No Evil," that his two weeks of training at Point Harvey was, for all purposes, an "advanced terrorism course." Baer was trained in the use of plastic and other types of explosive materials. It is believed that former CIA and Chilean DINA intelligence agent Michael Townley, convicted in 1978 for the 1976 car bombing assassination in Washington, DC of former Chilean Foreign Minister Orlando Letelier and his American assistant, Roni Moffitt. Townley became part of the federal witness protection program in 1978 after his conviction in the murder of Letelier. However, Townley was spotted in Stockholm in 1986 a week before the assassination of Swedish Prime Minister Olof Palme.

After 9/11, CIA paramilitary operatives who were assigned to the agency's Special Activities Division (SAD) and deployed against the Taliban in Afghanistan were first trained at Harvey Point.

Northeast North Carolina: Center of global terrorist training activity and home to CIA's Harvey Point car bombing training facility and Xe (former Blackwater) false flag terror camp.

With the current controversy raging about the roles that acting CIA station chief in Pakistan Raymond Davis and suspected CIA agent Aaron DeHaven, both jailed in Pakistan -- Davis for murder of two Pakistani nationals and DeHaven for visa violations -- may have played in false flag terrorist attacks in Pakistan, there is an interesting footnote to Harvey Point. Just north of the CIA terrorist training facility, past Elizabeth City, lies the sprawling Moyock, North Carolina training facility of the company formerly called Blackwater and now known as Xe Services. Now known as the United States Training Center, the Moyock facility is on a former U.S. Navy installation that once hosted a U.S. Naval Security Group Activity listening station that was part of the National Security Agency's global signals intelligence eavesdropping network.

Harvey Point is used by Navy SEALS/Underwater Demolition Teams for training. Blackwater founder Erik Prince had served as a Navy SEAL and many of his early Blackwater employees were ex-SEALS. Their numbers were later supplemented by retired CIA officers. Navy SEALS/UDT and CIA teams trained at Harvey Point in the 1980s for the illegal planting of mines in Nicaraguan waters. In 1990, personnel trained at the base unsuccessfully attempted to capture Colombian drug lord Pablo Escobar in the secret "POKEWEED" operation.

In 2008, the U.S. government used an eminent domain acquisition to procure the Moorman Pine tract adjacent to Harvey Point for use by the CIA base. The owners of the tract acquired the property in 2002 for a golf and residential project. The owners settled with the government for $5.8 million.

The operations of Harvey Point and Moyock appear to complement one another and jointly place a huge secretive CIA footprint in northeast North Carolina....

Our article on the CIA's highly-secretive Harvey Point Defense Testing Activity near Hertford, North Carolina apparently rattled more than a few cages in upper echelon Washington, perhaps so much so that we experienced a communication outage on March 3 that was blamed by AT&T on a degraded cell phone tower in south Arlington, Virginia.

We spoke to a number of military personnel who served in the Tidewater, Virginia area who were unfamiliar with the Harvey Point base, once known as a U.S. Navy Supply Center, but which has existed for some five decades as a CIA's "special operations" training facility under Defense Department "cover."

Complementing the CIA's agent training facility at Camp Peary, Virginia, just outside Williamsburg, Harvey Point was once known as "Isolation Tropic", as opposed to Camp Peary, also known as "Isolation" or "The Farm." Harvey Point is sometimes referred to by CIA officers as "The Point."

The CIA has good reason to be silent about the operations at Harvey Point. For decades, under the guise of "counter-terrorism" training, Harvey Point has been training terrorists, including members of the Kosovo Liberation Army, anti-Castro commandos of Brigade 2506 and Alpha 66, the South Korean Central Intelligence Agency (KCIA), Amine Gemayel's military intelligence assassins, Israel's Sayeret Matkal commandos, Angolan guerrillas of the National Union for the Total Independence of Angola (UNITA), Chechen guerrillas, the secret police of the infamous Greek colonels' junta, and the Honduran death squad Movimiento Anti-Communista Hondureno (MACHO), as well as CIA Latin America cocaine smugglers used in "Operation Pseudo Miranda" during William Casey's reign at Langley. The latter operation was described by former CIA operative Kenneth C. Bucchi in his 2000 book, "Operation Pseudo Miranda: A Veteran of the CIA Drug Wars Tells All." The training of the CIA cocaine smugglers, according to Bucchi, was conducted at Harvey Point and the Tonopah Test Range (Area 52), located 70 miles northwest of the CIA's top secret testing facility at Area 51 in Nevada.

Through the auspices of the International Police Academy, using the conduit of a CIA proprietary called International Police Services, Inc. (INPOLSE) of Washington, DC, foreign police officers were sent to Harvey Point for training in bombings, arson, and assassinations. There is some evidence in Guyana that members of Jim Jones's People's Temple and their Guyanese security liaison officers also received training in weapons use at Harvey Point. Jonestown is widely believed to have been a CIA MK-ULTRA mind control operation with the cover story that most of the Americans who died there did so after drinking poisoned Kool Aid. In fact, most were shot to death at close range.

In 2009, the archives of the Health Ministry of Guyana was gutted by a fire caused by an arson attack. Suspiciously, a contingent from the US Southern Command based in Miami was dispatched to Georgetown to "investigate" the fire. On October 24, 1979, almost a year after the Jonestown massacre, Vincent Teekah, Guyana's Minister of Education was assassinated by a gunshot at close range. On June 13, 1980, Guyanese opposition leader Walter Rodney was assassinated by a car bomb. Guyanese Defense Force officers were among those trained at Harvey Point and the CIA was linked to the assassinations of Teekah and Rodney.

One of Harvey Point's graduates was General Ziaur Rahman, who is believed to have participated in the assassination of Bangladesh President Sheikh Mujibur Rahman on August 15, 1975, along with members of his family and staff. One of the generals involved was believed to be Ziaur Rahman who is alleged to have been working for the CIA. Two of Sheikh Mujib's daughters escaped assassination since they were visiting West Germany at the time. One is Bangladesh's current prime minister, Sheikh Hasina Wazed. Ziaur Rahman became president in 1977 after serving as the de facto leader since the coup. Immediately, Ziaur Rahman reversed Sheikh Mujib's secular and socialist policies, turning Bangladesh into an "Islamic" republic tied to the West. On May 30, 1981, Ziaur Rahman was assassinated by a group of army officers.

Harvey Point was also involved in the training of other Islamists. In his 2000 book, "Unholy Wars," this editor's late friend John Cooley, the longtime Middle East correspondent for ABC News, wrote that Harvey Point was used to train the Afghan mujahidin, including many irregulars who would later end up in the ranks of the Taliban and Osama bin Laden's "Al Qaeda" organization. At Harvey Point the Afghan guerrilla fighters learned about "sophisticated fuses, timers, and explosives; automatic weapons with armor-piercing ammunition, remote-control devices for triggering mines and bombs." Cooley further described the Afghans' CIA training at Harvey Point, Camp Peary, and Fort Bragg. It included honing the Afghans' local skills of local Afghan skills of throat cutting and disemboweling, as well as more sophisticated training in bombing commercial aircraft, buses, cars, limousines, power plants and transmission towers, office buildings, airport terminals, hotels, movie theaters, and hotels.

Prime Minister Hasina recently forced Nobel Peace Prize laureate Muhammed Yunus off the board of Bangladesh's Grameen Bank and cited as one of the reasons Yunus's micro-loan program, for which he was awarded the Nobel Prize, as "sucking blood from the poor" with micro-loan program. President Obama's mother, Stanley Ann Dunham Soetoro, worked on micro-loan programs for the Ford Foundation, among other organizations, in Pakistan and Indonesia.

Harvey Point has also been used by Los Alamos National Laboratory to conduct nuclear material detection testing. In a 1998 paper delivered to the Institute of Nuclear Materials Management Conference in Naples, Florida, technical details of the work at Harvey Point are described as follows:

"Quantrad Sensor, Inc. (QSI) licensed the Ranger (TM) technology from Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) in 1997. The Material Control and Accountability group at LANL uses the Ranger (TM) for in situ nuclear material (NM) confirmation measurements, medical isotope entry/exit confirmations, hand scanning, and shipper confirmations. QSI is developing new applications by adapting the LANL software to identify unknown isotopes for nuclear smuggling and other national security scenarios.

Initial efforts at Harvey Point expanded the existing LANL NM confirmation software to include more isotopes and a nontechnical display. After Harvey Point, QSI replaced the ruggedized detector (≈1 0%) with a higher-resolution detector (7.5%) and developed a real-time pattern recognition system, RangerMaster. As a basis for RangerMaster, a spectrum for each isotope in the library was simulated with SYNTH. Careful analysis of the SYNTH spectra revealed that all the isotopes in the library could be identified with a unique set of regions of interest (ROIs). Initial validation of RangerMaster (TM) was done with the SYNTH spectra and the archived data from Harvey Point. Next, actual field tests were conducted at hospitals and the DOE Remote Sensing Laboratory (RSL) operated by Bechtel."

Bechtel has long maintained a cozy relationship with the CIA. Before World War II, Steve Bechtel formed a military-industrial complex partnership with John McCone. McCone later became the chairman of the Atomic Energy Commission and later, director of the CIA. The CIA has used Bechtel to provide cover for non-official cover CIA operatives abroad.

While the U.S. Army's "School of the Americas," now known as the Western Hemisphere Institute for Security and Cooperation, has been called the "School of the Assassins," Harvey Point can justifiably be called the "School of the Terrorists." And furthermore, the American taxpayers fund both operations without even a whimper from members of Congress. America: stick a fork in it, it's done....

UPDATE: On November 24, 2010, The Daily Advance of Elizabeth City, North Carolina ran a story about the fuselage of a Boeing 727 being transported through eastern North Carolina from Laurinburg to Harvey Point via Edenton on North Carolina highways. The plane was being hauled by Waff Contracting Company of Edenton and the photograph of the fuselage was taken by Debra Waff. One poster on the paper's website expressed outrage that the paper would publish the photo and news of the fuselage transport: "The transport of the fuselage was unannounced for a reason. IT WAS NONE OF THE NEWS MEDIA'S BUSINESS! What goes on at Harvey Point, or any military other bases, is really a matter of national security and does not need broadcasting to the public."

On December 10, 2008, The Virginia Pilot reported that Al Waff, the general superintendent of Waff Contracting, was kidnapped by a man with a semi-automatic handgun outside his Edenton home and was forced to drive the unknown assailant to Mobile, Alabama. Waff was not robbed but the assailant forced Waff to remove the battery from his cell phone during the drive. Waff was not harmed in the car jacking.

The museum timeline could have used any number of videos available to illustrate the 2nd plane hit. They chose this one where the angle doesn't catch the incoming plane and only a portion of the explosion can be seen.

They did like the background dialog in this 'amateur' video. The video-grapher luckily turned up the mic volume at the proper time to hear some guy say he saw an American Airlines 767 hit the first tower and before the 2nd plane hits declares "That Building is Going to Collapse."

ما يجري ليس غيمة عابرة. يمكن الالتفات الى سوريا وليبيا. واليمن. والجزائر. والمغرب. والبحرين ... هذه ليست رياحاً عابرة. انها عاصفة تضرب الاقليم. والدليل ان تونس لا تعيش في ظل بن علي. ومصر لا تعيش في ظل مبارك. ولا شيء يشير الى ان العاصفة فقدت اندفاعتها. وأن نارها لن تفيض عن مسارحها الحالية. واضح اننا نشهد نهاية حقبة وبداية اخرى.

ليست غيمة عابرة. انها مجموعة من السحب السوداء. تجمعت وتراكمت وتفاقمت شحناتها الكهربائية والمغناطيسية. لهذا تبدو الدول قلقة ومرتبكة. تماماً كما يحدث لطائرة تكتشف فجأة انها دخلت منطقة من المطبات الهوائية العنيفة. وأن الاجهزة التي كان عليها استشعار العواصف عن بعد لم تقم بمهمتها.

غياب السوابق يضاعف صعوبة المعالجة. كانت دول المنطقة تخاف في السابق من تورم أحلام الضباط في الثكن. او من مجموعات تتولى زرع القنابل او قيادة السيارات المفخخة او تنفيذ عمليات انتحارية. او من معارضات تقليدية. تدربت دول المنطقة على مواجهة هذا النوع من التحديات. لكنها تواجه اليوم ما هو اخطر. شبان يتدفقون من الجامعات او الثانويات الى شوارعها. شبان لا ينتمون الى حزب بل يتشاركون في اليأس من الواقع القائم وفي الرغبة في تغييره. لا يحركهم قائد ملهم. شبكات التواصل الاجتماعي تسهل مواعيدهم. والفضاء المفتوح يحميهم من الممارسات التي كانت الدول تلجأ اليها لإسكات الناقمين والمعارضينن وهو ما كانت تسميه وأد الفتنة في مهدها.

المشهد جديد تماماً. يكفي ان تثقب تظاهرة صغيرة هيبة النظام لتصبح الشوارع في عهدة المحتجين. تكبر الجموع وأحلام التغيير. تبدأ ايام الغضب. ثم ترتفع شعارات لم يكن المواطنون قبل ايام يجازفون بترداد مثلها داخل منازلهم. وإذا اطلقت الشرطة الرصاص لتفريق المحتجين يعترض باراك اوباما على الاستخدام المفرط للقوة ويطالب السلطة بمحاورة المحتجين.

المشهد الجديد أشاع الخوف لدى دول الاقليم. الطريقة الوحشية التي تعامل بها نظام القذافي مع الاحتجاجات في بنغازي تكشف حجم مخاوفه. بدد العقيد وقته وثروة بلاده على محاولات اضرام نار الثورات والانتفاضات في الخارج، لكنه اطلق جيشه ولجانه حين ارتفعت هتافات التغيير في بلده. يحب الثورات شرط ان تكون بعيدة. يدعم التغيير شرط ان يكون بعيداً. الطريقة التي تعاملت بها السلطات السورية مع احتجاجات الامس تكشف ايضاً خوفاً عميقاً. الثوراة التي جاءت بقوة الجماهير والشارع تخاف اليوم من الجماهير والشارع.

الارتباك شديد والخوف واضح. والمشهد كئيب ومتفجر. اضاعت دول كثيرة عقوداً متتالية. فقر وتهميش. تعثر التنمية وغياب المؤسسات. تعليم رديء وبطالة. تجمعت السحب القاتمة. الهراوات لا تكفي والرصاص محظور او باهظ التكاليف. لقد انتهى عصر الطمأنينة. الطمأنينة المفرطة مضرة كالقلق الدائم

All the while Lebanon is mesmerized with forming a new Government and the Constitutionality issues....

The constitution is NOT the problem in the recent Lebanese stalemates. It is the lack of respect for the constitution that is an issue.

How can a people claim to be guided by the constitution when it is convenient and to discard the constitution aside when the constitution presents an obstacle?

Lebanon needs to empower the Constitutional council to act as a final arbiter on what is constitutional and what is not . That requires not only empowering the Constitutional council but allowing any citizen to have unencumbered access to the council and its chamber. Had that been the case then I would have brought a long time ago a case that challenges the constitutionality of the election of the current president as well as the constitutionality of having sectarian affiliation serve as a prerequisite for some governmental elected offices such as Speaker, PM and President....

A constitution is not supposed to spell out the details of the procedures in the daily affairs of a nation. It is a sacred document that is to offer general guidance about the most important principles that a state cherishes; personal freedom, executive powers, legislative power …This does not mean that ambiguity is to rule the day... It simply means that the judiciary , the Constitutional Council, can make rulings as issues arise that will spell out what is acceptable and what is not. An effective Constitutional Council is to act as a guardian of the constitution on behalf of all of us and its acts can and do lead to a living constitution. Unfortunately the Constitutional Council was disbanded when the country needed it most and its composition reflects political allegiances more than it reflects judicial merit.

In Lebanon it is clear that the PM designate is to form a cabinet composed from whoever he wants and the president has to sign off on the composition prior to its being sent to the Chamber of Deputies for their final approval. This is very clear and any other additions are simply unnecessary baggage. There is no such thing as an allocation to the president or a veto power or a proportional representation relative to the parliamentary seats. As I have argued before many times, this simple novel interpretation simply kills the function of the Chamber by making the Cabinet the mini-Chamber with all the powers. It will in effect combine the legislative and the executive together when the intent is for a separation...

No , the problem is not in the constitution but in governance. Unfortunately very few, if any, of the political leaders respect the constitution and have the courage to stand up in its defense. Pity a nation whose leaders are unprincipled....

All of this is designed to guard against any clear majoritarian decision-making, ensuring that sectarian deal-making and ad hoc arrangements rule the day. So I agree that the Constitution is very much at fault. But it’s worth pointing out that the Constitution accurately reflects the political community it “constitutes”. Should it be — indeed can it be — a document that leads the way to a new form of political community? Might such a constitution simply be too out of step with its community? The upshot of this might be that the Lebanese Constitution has to evolve, and possibly quite slowly.... Even the US Constitution had to evolve to some extent, in step with its constituency ....

The rules need to be clearer. There are very few principled leaders the world over, so it is futile to moan about governance and unprincipled-ness… An essential precondition to getting people to respect the rule of law is to make that law unambiguous.

At the very least, a time limit should be imposed....

Even in the ideal situation when Taif eventually gets fully implemented by abolishing confessionalism, we are expecting to get some mechanism that will safeguard the respected rights of the constituent communities. We will never be true liberal democrats in the full sense of the word. It looks like it is our fate due to multiple reasons. There will always be safeguards for the principle of co-existence....

Big chunks of the UP.SO.-brokered regional security apparatus are collapsing like papier-mache castles; people long dismissed as irrelevant to the fates of their respective polities are forcing the question of their existence; and the idea of an Arab Middle East suddenly matters in a way it hasn’t for decades. And the local conversation basically amounts to who will be the second deputy dogcatcher in the Upper Metn. I get that all politics is local, but Jesus, who cares?

If people think that Lebanon is so singular that none of what is happening elsewhere matters, then I’d love to have that view explained. And if the general view is that dominant politics can’t be pierced by grand tumult in the neighborhood, then great; let’s hear that explained too. But I look at what conversation takes place here and wonder whether there’s a news blackout that strikes this forum in particular. If nothing else, don’t you want ask why Lebanon can’t/won’t/mustn’t be a candidate for volcanic political change?

It’s as if the Lebanese do not want to be governed.... As a Lebanese myself, I certainly don’t want to be governed by any of the current political parties. I don’t even know what any of them stand for! Anarchy is the way to go for now. Let the private sector and free market run the show. The strong swim and the weak gets a helping hand....

This is the way it works now, except Lebanese have a wasteful, inefficient government that gets in the way and steals most of what is out there.

The soap opera must end. Hariri, Saqr, Geagea, Gemayels, Jumblatts, Arslans, Harb, Sfeir, Khazens, etc. are all the same... Pawns placed in front of the Lebanese to keep them occupied while their riches are plundered for the benefit of a few – mostly the puppets themselves.... Classic diversionary tactics.
